Flip Your Welcome Mat

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. - John 13:14-16

Step onto most doorsteps, and you'll find a friendly welcome mat waiting beneath your feet. Some bear the word WELCOME in bold letters, while others boast intricate and humorous designs or simple functionality. Regardless of style, the message remains the same: any welcome mat serves as a bridge between inside and outside, inviting passage. Yet, this seemingly warm gesture can also act as a dividing line, separating us from them - until a genuine welcome is extended, and the door swings open.

At my place, a welcome mat is sported that's both decorative and practical. Not many have taken notice. However, people need not comment to understand the essence of those within. They grasp the nature of those living here. There are times when my door stands open wide to embrace family, friends, and even strangers. And to be perfectly honest, there are occasions when I'm a bit more guarded with my hospitality. The Quantum household comprehends that the true spirit of our home mirrors the authenticity of our hearts. Graciousness sometimes flows effortlessly, and at other times, it stumbles. Yet, through years of living, we've unearthed a profound truth: when we mentally and emotionally flip our welcome mat, God expands the entrance for us to both serve and be served.

Consider the renowned Last Supper depicted in John 13. In His customary fashion, Jesus imparts His wisdom by setting an example, priming the atmosphere for transformation on both sides of that symbolic welcome mat. You need not literally wash feet to embody this principle in your relationships. Christ beckons us to embody a constant stance of humility and warmth toward others, cultivating an environment where mutual servitude can thrive. A shared meal transforms into a heart-to-heart conversation. Tending to a wound blossoms into healing - physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually ... over time.

Providing shelter becomes a haven, a space to exhale the burdens of life. Whether knocking to enter or welcoming someone in, we can emanate and experience God-honoring hospitality.

The next time you step out, glance down. Let the welcome mat remind you that it's more than just an external greeting to guests; it's an internal prompt of who Christ envisions you (and me) to be and evolve into.

What's holding you back from a more welcoming disposition? Engage in a heartfelt conversation with God or a confidante about your desire to love and live like Christ. Can you recall someone who wholeheartedly welcomed you during a turbulent phase of life? Today, take a moment to send a text or make a call expressing your gratitude for their genuine kindness and hospitality. Be well!
